Protomartyr Unleash ‘Dope Cloud’, Album and Tour On Way

Have you ever, when out drinking, had a mini-blackout, and woke up halfway through a conversation? Like, you open your eyes, one at a time. It’s dimly lit and a complete stranger is sitting beside you, shouting into your ear to compete with loud music, telling you about how the whole world is going to shit? It surely can’t just be me? Oh well.

‘Dope Cloud’ is the sound of a bar room philosopher, telling you the world is going to shit, whether you’re listening or are not. “That’s not gonna save you, man” is the constant refrain as vocalist Joe Casey tackles religion, the financial system, the average Joe’s place in the world. Backed by a band ten years his junior, jagged, clanging guitar lines flare around Casey as the song charges towards it’s doom laden conclusion as the titular entity descends.

Protomartyr come across as a scuzzier Hold Steady, maybe one that preferred ‘This Nation’s Saving Grace’ to ‘Born To Run’. There’s definitely something of Mark E. Smith about frontman Joe Casey, all detached demeanour, deadpan delivering and incisive intellect.  The album should be a scream.

‘The Agent Intellect’ is out October 9th via Hardly Art. The band will also be touring the UK in October/November
