PHOTOGRAPHY

Another Britain 2013

In March 2013 photographers Tom Johnson & Jack Eden embarked on the first of a three part series documenting & exploring communities, cultures & traditions that make Britain what it is today. In a beat- up 1980s motorhome they travelled parts of the Midlands & Southern Wales. Another Britain Part I is the result of this journey.

INTERVIEWS

Duke Special
We caught up with him before his Leeds gig -
"I love art collaborations. I feel it is a really enriching thing to do and you can take yourself to new places. I just love the collusion of all the art forms and how music responds to literature, but also the blurred lines between all the art forms."

Smokey Bastard
A Q&A with the folk-punk noisemongers -
"This led to tattooing of the tongue. All the while Dickensian Londoners were taxied around the room on a gimp drawn cart. A girl dressed as Alice picked apples that were nailed to a wall while the band played."

Thin Lizzy
Ricky Warwick is the new front man -
"Living in the past is a terrible thing and itŐs something I think should be discouraged, life goes on. Remembering the past is great, paying homage to the past is great but living in the past - not healthy."

Duke Special
Duke Special discusses his latest project -
"I regard theatre as a melting pot for all the art forms; visual, theatrical, musical."

Ricky Warwick
Billy Duffy of The Cult calls him -
"Tough Folk for the masses"

EMPIRE

The police force in Afghanistan are kidnapping young boys from villages in Helmand province, holding them prisoners, raping them regularly and frequently, getting them to serve tea and murdering them. In Helmand everyone is growing opium poppies. The marines that are left are listening to DVDs and lifting weights.

Boadilla Del Monte - where the streets have no name

SPORT AND PHOTO JOURNALISM

A Fan's Eye View of the Beautiful Game

"When a goal goes in - hot steaming gold runs through your veins - you become invincible for as long as the feeling lasts". This set of photographs focuses on the fans not the players - giving a fan's eye view of Scunthorpe United's 2-1 away win against Millwall on January 31st 2009. The photos in this collection show how fans express a range of emotions from frustration to nail biting tension, from victorious displays of dominance to apathy.

TRAVEL

Things to do in Paris, France

Paris is a rustic city, where the pace of life is meandering, slowed down so that Parisians can take time to enjoy the finer things in life. You know red wine, cheese and the like. Wrap up warm if you're planning to go during the winter months. Paris is an overcast, wet and most of all cold city. But dont let the chill put you off - the quality of life in Paris resonates with any culture vulture - giving them a Ready Break glow which acts as an effective antidote to subzero temperatures.

LONDON STREET ART

Shoreditch Street Art, London

It would be wonderful to think that the artists who ply their work on the streets might act as an inspiration, so that the mindless scrawl that you might find in places like Tottenham, will one day be replaced by urban masterpieces. But that would be to ignore the political economy which underpins this work. The guys who produce this stuff are educated, linked in, global, skilled up artists. Their work might be street, and not all of them might be loaded, but they are part of the scene. So letŐs not over romanticise this. This isnŐt the working classes getting streetwise and looking for a way to make life better for everyone. Whilst much of the work is iconoclastic and challenging, this open air art gallery is a playground for middle class adults.

SOCIAL SPACES

Peckham Library

At the beginning of the 1990s it was decided that Peckham was a dump that needed a bit of regeneration. A budget of 265 million pounds and a seven year programme was created to regenerate the area in which the library now stands.

SOCIAL COMMENT

The Great Fallacies of Vegetarianism

On why it isn't such a great idea to be a vegetarian.

The Charm Offensive - The Art of Bullying

A guy much bigger than you, comes up to you, intimidating you, working at a subconscious level, his body language and posture tells you I am in control, I am in charge, and just you wait and see what this body will do to yours if you object, and yet he is all smiles and happiness, happy comments, and your natural sense of intimidated self, you feel that it would perhaps be in your best interests, or at least you hope it would be in your best interests to submit to his emotional demands.

GENRES
What's with the pigeon-holing? How much use are genres anyway?
