The Pittsburgh Ballet Theater performed PETER PAN for an appreciative audience who was in awe of the performance. PETER PAN is not what one thinks of when thinking of ballet. This interpretation was brilliant and wowed everyone in attendance. This is not Disney and this is purely a beautiful ballet for the young and the old to enjoy.
PETER PAN is not a typical story. It is about a boy who does not grow up nor does Peter Pan want to grow up. This story has been told in a lot of ways onscreen but to see a ballet performance take PETER PAN and presents it in such an elegant way is highly impressive. The Pittsburgh Ballet performs at Benedum Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Benedum Center is a beautiful theater with a rich history that includes lovely, elegant chandeliers which are cleaned each year and people come from all over to see this event.
PETER PAN is a great way to kick off their Emarald Season. The idea to turn a Disney classic and wonderful fun story into a ballet is genius. This is a story that resonates with young and old. It is a story of family and finding new friends who become family. It is about new beginnings and new endings. It is about good and evil. The costumes are beautifully made and the performance is gorgeously choreographed.
The performance of PETER PAN is in two acts and a twenty minute intermission. Act One is The Darling Home, this show begins to explain how Peter Pan came to be lost and the other children are with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Darling. Each night the children, Wendy, John and Michael, notice and start to play along with the fairies who visit them in the children’s bedroom. One night the Darling parents leave for a party , while they are gone, Wendy has a dream that turns into a nightmare but Wendy is rescued by a shadow. Once awaken by this dream, she sees a fairy light bouncing around the room and while investigating, Peter Pan makes his entrance and the excitement begins.
Act Two is titled Neverland and this is the introduction of the Lost Boys and of course the dreaded Captain Hook. As the story goes along through dance, the Darling children interact with the Lost Boys on Neverland, and then they are captured by Captain Hook. Peter Pan comes to the rescue! This is fantastic choreography and this keeps the excitement throughout the performance.
