The Twistettes – ‘Red Door Open’ – “bang full of attitude and energy”

LAST NIGHT FROM GLASGOW         2 May 2025

Lots of fun, this. A big beat and racing fuzzy distorto-bass. Rock and roll squeezed through over-stretched equipment. Songs don’t crash the three minute barrier and if they can make an impact in two, that’s where they leave it.

It’s the third studio album from Scottish sister duo Jo (vocals/bass) and Nicky (drums). I’m a fan of stripped down three-piece bands and this is even more raw, being simply bass, drums and vocals. It’s a dirty, primal sound that has elements of rockabilly and punk making up the skeleton of the sound. Choruses are made of hooks and addictively catchy, while lyrics are bang full of attitude and energy.

The sisters have been releasing records since 2016 along with touring in the UK and Far East. They know what they’re looking for and the sound here is unfussy with a sense of being in the same room. Emotions are high and angry songs like Coal Dust rub shoulders with mosh-fodder like Bounce Baby. The only exception is the atmospheric opener, Open, that serves as an invocation, summoning the unholy whirlwind that follows.

Being on the Last Night From Glasgow label and also true to their rock roots, you can buy this on vinyl as well as the usual formats. What you can’t do, is catch them on tour – c’mon Twistettes, get back in a van and get moving. That old live album is only a snapshot of a live experience.
