Pittsburgh, PA, USA- On a cool night in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, a large group of people were walking into the Benedum Theater for an amazing performance from Straight No Chaser. This is an a cappella band who do a wonderful holiday show each year and it is a fun time for everyone. This is not a typical symphony, orchestra, or a Christmas carol concert. This is an experience. An experience that has turned into a tradition each season for many families and friends.
The Benedum Theater hosts the Pittsburgh Ballet, and this theater is a legend. Its chandeliers are beautiful and huge. This is a great theater for ballet and for shows throughout the year. The audience is indeed ready for the Christmas spirit to feel their souls through a lovely night of music. As the lights go down there is a projection screen that shows a video of the fun and quirky side to the band trying to get to a show. The video is fun and it has Chevy Chase (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation fame) in it to help the gentlemen. This all-male a cappella group is a powerhouse of harmonies. Their harmonies are what makes Straight No Chaser a delightfully, entertaining, and fun band. The guys have fun on stage, and their fans can see that during their performance.
The stage is simple with different sized raised platforms with a variety of license plates on the front of the platforms. The guys take to the stage all decked out and ready to perform. Their attire matches Christmas, wearing red jackets, white dress shirts, black dress pants, with red socks. The stylish band is happy to be in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. The guys in the band are from all over and most met in college where Straight No Chaser began their a cappella journey.
The stage lights range include the colors: orange, red, blue, white, pink, yellow, purple, and green. The stage lights up with their harmonies and then there is their dancing. It is interesting choreography and it matches the music- especially when they perform The Christmas Can-Can. No matter what kind of dancing, this is fun and entertaining. Their harmonies are the highlight when they perform. It is incredible the way their voices blend and what kind of sounds their voices can make together. This is a special kind of talent, and it takes practice to perfect the way they sound.
The songs include Christmas favorites and Disney medley that is interesting in fun light-hearted performance. There are songs such as Friends in Low Places (originally by Garth Brooks) and the audience sang along with Straight No Chaser. There is a point in the show where audience participation happens by learning beat box skills. This is a fun interactive way to show how it all began for a younger person.
The best part of the show is at the end of the night, the last song is with no microphone, and it is just the most beautiful version of O Holy Night. This performance is a lovely holiday treat.
