Admittedly the first thing that one ought to bear in mind when designing a hospital, is its function. But the Addenbrookes complex in Cambridge, is one fucking ugly proposition. But it is also an extraordinarily well pointed and well proportioned ugliness. Everything has its place – and even though everything is out of place with everything else around it. It is both bewildering and yet manages to trigger a reaction of apathy and numbness. What a truly devastating place.
