You may not have had the pleasure of hearing Vance Joy’s songs before, or maybe you have but didn’t realise it yet.

“God Loves You When You’re Dancing” is the first EP release from the Melbourne Singer/Songwriter and will wet the appetites of many, leaving them waiting in anticipation for Joy’s first full-length album.

Emmylou kicks off the EP with no introduction required, Joy’s wickedly soulful voice leads the way beautifully. As the song progresses so does the amount of instrumentation and by the end of the song, Emmylou is transformed into a big folk sing-along, which is difficult not to embrace.

The second track on the EP – Riptide has already received high acclaim from the critics – Fearne Cotton naming the track the song of 2013 is definitely not a praise to be ignored. I can foresee that Riptide is going to be one of those songs that will define the Summer months, being played loud on hot sunny days and enjoyed in festival campsites.

The remaining tracks, Play With Fire, Snaggletooth and From Afar offer much of the same soulful folk brilliance that Vance Joy does so well.  The penultimate track slowing things down ever so slightly while he tells his baby how he “loves her snaggletooth”, – lush.

It’s no surprise that Vance Joy has already been given the recognition to tour supporting Julia Stone and Ben Howard. Next time he will surely be headlining his own tour with the next Vance Joy supporting him.
