‘Change’ by Pale Waves- A Modern Emo Muse

‘Change’ is Pale Waves first single to come from their second album ‘Who am I?’ set for release in February 2021. Since the release of their debut album ‘My Mind Makes Noises’ in 2018, the band have soared and accumulated a huge fan base within the indie-pop genre.

Their new single has already been debuted by BBC Radio 1 as their ‘Hottest Track in The World’ and has shown Pale Waves’ fans just what their second album has to offer. When speaking about ‘Who Am I?’, front woman Heather Baron-Gracie explained “For me, music and art is for people not to feel so alone and isolated; I want to be that person my fans look up to and find comfort in.” This is something that the band perfect in ‘Change’ as it is a wistful look back on a past relationship, with Heather’s songwriting exploring her emotions in terms of love and how confusing they can be. With lines such as ‘I’m being so irrational, don’t know what to do’ and the juxtaposing ‘I keep running around in circles, but you stay the same’ it perfectly encapsulates the confusing and frustrating feelings that come with falling in love, a subject that is touched upon in their upcoming album along with depression, distraction and optimism.

A heartfelt, guitar-filled piece, ‘Change’ demonstrates the eclectic mix we can expect from ‘Who Am I?’, with the raw lyricism that the band has previously used throughout their past works, which has helped them to achieve awards such as NME’s Under the Radar award and to be shortlisted for the BBC Sound of 2018.

The flower and butterfly bounteous video (directed by Johnny Goddard) reflects the softness of the song compared to some of their previous singles, as it delves into the innocence and growth that comes with understanding what love is all about. It depicts the bright, blossoming and new feelings experienced from the emotion, enabling front woman Heather to be someone her fans can relate and ‘look up to.’ Though I think it is suffice to say that Heather and Pale Waves have been doing a brilliant job of that already.
