Smag På Dig Selv – ‘This Is Why We Lost’ – “driving energy”

STUNT RECORDS            6th March 2026

Poundingly hypnotic breakbeat jazz. Pushing melodies on twin saxes, the only other sounds are drums and electronic beats and it makes for a driving energy that can pop back into vulnerable melodies before spinning back up on a ladder of arpeggios and exploding into Happy Hardcore moments. It’s all a bit of a whirl and dizzy-making but never dull.

Bang full of surprises, there is also a comfort in the familiar yet disparate sounds colliding and combining, bringing a smile when a dreamy sax falls into a Euro-club banger beat. The Danish trio have been mashing peoples’ heads since 2018 and an evening out with them is likely to be a lot of fun as well as surprisingly accessible.

Oliver Lauridsen (tenor sax), Thorbjørn Øllgaard (baritone and bass sax), and Albert Holberg (drums) bring all sorts into the album. Alongside the manic Gabba beats are a plaintive female voice singing a Palestinian folk song as well as the band’s mums. Drone on ‘This Is Why We Lost’ is the backdrop to lonely sax, while ‘Jeg Ved Ikke Hvad Jeg Siger’ is speedy chat-rapping on top of a rattling beat. Then we run into the crazy mash-up of ‘Our Mothers Made A Punk Band’ at the end with the first 4/4 beat we’ve heard.

It’s a rolling jumble of sound, never content to stay still for long enough to be pigeonholed. Fun.
