The Studio 68! & Dani Turner – ‘Rollin’ – “delicious madness”

DETOUR RECORDS                 20th February 2026

Formed in 1992 as a mod revival band, the band has dropped out, tuned in and dropped in again before bringing us up to date and back to the future with this slab of wig-out heavy soul funk psychedelia. Having nicked the singer of a covers outfit, Jefferson Archive, it isn’t a surprise that there are powerful Grace Slick-style vocals here from Dani Turner (rightly given equal billing with the band name). But alongside that are flange pedal, waka-waka Shaft guitar, Hammond organ, psych riffs, Funkadelic moves and all manner of groovy fun.

Then there’s fun lyrics like “funky people, like Brian Eno” (in the list of ‘Funky People’) but references are less LA, more Camden Town on the single, ‘Need A Miracle’ – a music biz done bad by the acts song.

Lyrics are delivered with the power of divas like Bette Davis or Bellrays’ Lisa Kekaula. They are loud and in your face, riding high on sweeping, churning guitar and keys. A song like ‘Wasn’t Ready’ crosses into American rock and had me thinking of the Bob Seger Band in the melodic driving push of it. Elsewhere we straddle the London Sixties psych scene, the LA / San Francisco late-Sixties hippy bands and heavy soul rock. With bands like Canada’s The Damn Truth doing well, it’s a good time to be reviving the sound.
