Iggy Pop Hints at Final Studio Album

Iggy recently came out with an absolute cracker, announcing his ‘Post-Pop Depression’ album/project, with a set of names who, combined, make up pretty much half of my top ten album list. Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather), and Matt Helders (Arctic Monkeys). As you can guess, I’m pretty excited about this one, and as with any great album it’s got a story behind it. So it goes that Iggy texts Josh out of the blue, before the two began bouncing prose poetry between each other, “and what better way to get to know anyone?” Josh told Stephen Colbert on the Late Show. Three months spent holed up in the desert recording in absolute secrecy, and we’ve got an album on the way, complete with a tour covering most of America and Europe.

The music itself isn’t quite what you’d expect at first thought from a group of people who’ve made their name in heavy rock music. ‘Gardenia’, the first released single from the album, opens with an airy guitar and synth combination, before Iggy comes in crooning. The sound begins to make a little more sense when you look at the members more recent work. The track has the minimalist feel of any one of their recent albums, and the same dark, lusting feel. This is a sound that is absolutely realised in the second single, ‘Break into your heart’. Josh and Dean revert to more familiar scales and sequences, but it is still indisputably different to anything they’ve done before. There’s power, darkness, and most importantly, an evident chemistry between all members on stage. The albums due out on the 18th of March, and the tour dates are posted below. With Iggy recently hinting at “wrapping it up” after this in an interview with Beats 1 presenter Matt Wilkinson (Via Loudwire), if you miss this chance there will come a day when you tell your grandkids “I had the chance to see Iggy Pop once…”
