Cotton Claw announce new single: Grainy

Last month I reviewed Cotton Claw’s first LP, Volutes, An experiment that has the heart of a proven formula.
The French band has released Grainy, the first single to promote their debut album.

This is one of my favourite tracks from Volutes and it’s certainly one of the most interesting ones. It’s catchy, but it shatters simplicity and mediocrity, two words that are usually associated with popular music.

Cotton Claw – Volutes

Cotton Claw has found a way to add depth to club music by creating harmony in the variety of sounds. There’s a dance beat, synths, dreamy hazes that touch on Trance and a bass-like line that’s worthy of a chip-tune track. But the more important aspect is that it manages to contrast an up-beat tune with a rather sorrowful chorus. It’s hard to explain, but this is where Cotton Claw excels. They take things that are not usually paired up together and blend it organically, without forcing or breaking the flow of the track. It almost feels like they are telling you a story with a beginning, middle and end. You can see it unravel in front of your eyes. And there’s magic in that.

Cotton Claw – Volutes is out now. You can buy it on Bandcamp, Amazon, iTunes or listen on Spotify.

Reminds me of some of the trance of the early 1990s…
