CALLING ALL ANGELS MAID IN SHEFFIELD 16.7.12 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
Calling All Angels is the second album from Sheffield born singer songwriter Helen Boulding. This is not an unpleasant album and it is fairly easy to listen to, it just feels lacking somehow. Boulding’s Joni Mitchell esque vocals are perfect as usual but the songs are repetitive and I’m not sure I could remember any of the lyrics or the melodies despite listening to the album several times. Apparently influenced by Bat for Lashes, Sneaker Pimps, Dubstar and the Cardigans, the album seems rather fragmented. Boulding is at her most comfortable when showcasing her acoustic sound, whilst the most experimental songs just don’t seem to be experimental enough. If saccharine pop tinged ever so slightly at the edges with synths is your bag then this is for you. www.helenboulding.com |
