BURNING YOUR HOUSE DOWN

Thirty-three minutes, eleven songs, the energy of a dozen albums. Seventy-five seconds in and they’re ripping a guitar solo over a hollering hoarse refrain. The Jim Jones Revue are an old-school rock and roll band without being in any way revivalist – they’re just channelling the pure sex of hammering piano and guitars, the furious pace, the shaking and jumping, the sort of thing I’ve only heard in old Jerry Lee Lewis records. But this is louder and grimier. This is like The Birthday Party and The Cramps are having a competition to out-do Little Richard for pace - i.e. loud, fast, filthy, distorted, wailing rock and roll punk blues.

I feel like I should dissect the album, name stand-out tracks, analyse it a bit. But I can’t – this is an of-a-piece album, cut from a big sheet of rock cloth and I’ve just turned it up to neighbour-bugging level while I wave my arms around. Forget the analysis and understanding – you need to hear this if you want any sense of how hard a band can rock. After half an hour you’ll have blisters on your eardrums and Jim’s sweat will have soaked through your speakers.
