MONKEY IN A CHICKEN PEN
RICHARD PROCTOR MUSIC 7.6.10
@www.vanguard-online.co.uk

'Monkey in a Chicken Pen' is the third album from this now three-piece (it would seem they have 'shed' two members along the way) rock band from Cardiff. Richard Proctor, the lead singer, guitarist, song writer and producer (oh, and label owner nonetheless...) is joined by Dave Beasley on bass and Rob Young on drums.

Opening track 'I Push, You Pull' is catchy and repetitive, 'What If' deals with the typical boy loves girl story and has strong guitars and drums. You would be forgiven for thinking 'My Name is God' was about Proctor given the control he has over this album (it's almost the Richard Proctor show), but apparently it isn't. Maybe. ‘Ex Wife’ is bluesy while ‘Pendulum’ is partially acoustic-based, and the quietest track on the album and showcases Proctor's vocals. Thunderous drums, catchy hooks and riffs are aplenty and are a constant throughout the album. Whilst not offering anything new or overly exciting this album is not a bad offering. It's often dark and offbeat, surreal and darkly comedic vocals are what save this album from being too formulaic
