Mitchell Museum
THE PETERS PORT MEMORIAL SERVICE ELECTRA FRENCH RECORDS 12.07.10 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
If you were so inclined to put a picture next to every word in the dictionary, then a mugshot of the Mitchell Museum lineup should surely illustrate “independent”. Choosing to reject offers from most major labels to remain free to do as they please (silly names and all), the Scottish four-piece’s debut offering is surprisingly mainstream, and promises to do great things. Opening with the short but punchy “We Won 2nd Prize”, the album’s sound definitely falls into the categories of fun-loving, summery and laid-back… with an element of tongue-in-cheek thrown in for good measure. With a sound that brushes past The Magic Numbers, The Automatic and Idlewild, we’re looking at an Indie band, but not necessarily without an obtuse angle. “No. 3”, for example, is a song dedicated to the art of calling in leisure boats whose time has run out; “Take The Tongue Out” is the track on the album that requires the most tongue action to sing along to, and “Copy + Paste” is rather different to its brethren. What Mitchell Museum have created with “The Peters Port Memorial Service” (apart from a title that’s rather difficult to remember) is an offering that sits very well next to many up and coming bands, and may well trump them. Think of the recent success of Bon Iver, Mumford & Sons, Bombay Bicycle Club and the upcoming return of Arcade Fire and you’re in the right genre for this band. All they need now is a little bit of good luck and for a national radio DJ to fall in love with them…. www.mitchellmuseum.co.uk |
