S.N.O. (Stonewall Noise Orchestra)
SWEET MISSISSIPPI DEAL SELF-RELEASED Free download available now @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
Normally free music downloads usually includes some dodgy software and the powers that be breathing down your neck. But some forward thinking bands are using this method to get their content out to the masses. This is true of SNO, who have released ‘Sweet Mississippi Deal’ as a download from their website and as free stuff goes, it’s not too bad. There’s a real Ozzy/Black Label Society sound with a heavy dose of Deep South Stoner Rock thrown in for good measure, a feat in itself when you consider the band hail from Sweden. The album kicks off with Black Cat Bone opening with a quote from Sir Dominic’s Bargain before immersing into some serious rock sound that’s so close to Ozzy’s new material, the question is who is inspiring who? But the song then takes on its own persona into something really special. ‘The Showdown’ continues to build on this staggering opening but then it almost as if the album becomes a victim of its own success, ‘A Song For The Fool’ and ‘I Am’ seeming to plateau albeit at altitude. But ‘One Hundred’ then veers off in a completely different direction with a classic ‘Sabbath’ sound which is only let down by the highly annoying white noise on the track - cut down the 7:23 running time and it would be a great doom metal track. With Skelletto Sound being the stand out track with its bluesy sound, its business as usual though the remaining tracks but the trumpets on ‘Interstates’ weren’t expected. Sweet Mississippi isn’t too deep and doesn’t hold too many surprises (with the exception of the brass section on the final track) but it’s an very credible effort, producing a first rate stoner sound showing a band who influences are close to the surface and who are not afraid to build on existing sounds and styles. www.snoband.com |
