BLUES, BALLADS & FAVORITES PROPER RECORDS 31.05.10 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
It must have been incredible to have been around at the birth of Rock ‘N’ Roll. To have been witness to people like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis creating sounds and styles that no-one had ever seen or heard before must have been amazing. The intervening fifty to sixty years has seen the excitement dissipate somewhat though. Now that we have instant access to any music we want, and with a myriad of styles and genres to explore ‘new’ bluesy 50’s rock seems rather out of place. Jimmie Vaughan was co-founder of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and brother of Stevie Ray, and on this album he’s covered songs by such seminal rockers as Little Richard (Send Me Some Lovin’) and Willie Nelson (‘Funny How time Slips Away’) There’s also songs by some fabulously monikered artists that I’ve never heard of (before my time obviously) such as Johnny Ace, Leonard Feather and Guitar Junior. The songs selected for this album weren’t chosen for any other reason than that they were the songs Jimmie liked the most from a huge list. Hence the ‘favorites’ tag. I’m not going to comment on the individual songs as I’m sure it will be blatantly obvious to anyone with a remote interest in music what they will be like. This album doesn’t really do much for me - maybe I’m missing the point, as Jimmie plays the songs with great skill and panache, and obviously had a lot of fun making this album. But my problem is that if you’re going to listen to this kind of thing it’s likely to be for a nostalgia trip – if that’s the case then why not just listen to the original stuff? www.jimmievaughan.com |
