The Boy Who Trapped the Sun
FIREPLACE POLYDOR 5.7.10 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
Wistful, haunting, alt-folk. Simple, melodic and laden with imagery. The Boy Who Trapped the Sun is 25 year old Colin MacLeod, hailing from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, this talented singer songwriter used to be in a punk band inspired by Rage Against the Machine – hard to believe listening to Fireplace. MacLeod proves that he can move from slow, melancholy tracks such as Golden to more upbeat songs like Katy. Beautifully arranged throughout, this debut album drags you into the singer's world. You are completely immersed. My favourite has to be Fireplace though – the opening beat combined with the harmonies and MacLeod's soothing voice is beautiful (not sure I have ever described a song as beautiful before). The hidden track – a spoken word outro if you will – seems to send the listener to the Isle of Lewis, and the second verse in Gaelic only adds to the exquisiteness. This is a wonderfully simple and charming debut album. One that you will listen to again and again. www.myspace.com/theboywhotrappedthesun |
