ABOUT LOVE MUTE RECORDS 25.1.10 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
An album that promises much, but delivers little, despite some flashes of inspiration. “It’s Frightening” opens with “Percussion Gun”, a track that suits its name, with a strong percussive drumbeat, and a lyrical sound not unlike Kasabian. So far so good. Sadly, it’s not until “Lioness” that the album really gets going. The first three tracks are very much nondescript copies of one other – each sounding like something that Kasabian may well have been involved with. But once you hit track four, something changes. Sure, the heavy and prominent drums that were introduced at the opening of the album are still there, but now they are merely a trademark of a band who have layered sounds and introduced many new instruments. We now have piano and electro, amongst other twiddles and effects, in the mix, making this a powerful and enjoyable track. Sadly, this is the album’s peak for, as soon as we move onto the following track, “Company I Keep”, the band return to their template sound and the tracks begin to merge into one another. I would recommend going out of your way to hear “Lioness”, but I wouldn’t bother with the rest of the album, which is a great shame. If the band had put as much thought into every track as they did this one, “It’s Frightening” could have been an album of the year. www.myspace.com/whiterabbits |
