Weezer
RADITUDE GEFFEN 2.11.09 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
Weezer’s seventh studio album is a mixed bag, with Rivers Cuomo’s experiments pushing the boundaries that little bit too far and making for uncomfortable listening. The opening pairing of "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" (the album’s first single), then “I’m Your Daddy” are both typical Weezer tracks, offering a strong entry to the album, while getting your hopes up… Sadly things are not destined to last. Of an album totalling 11 tracks, just four are what I would describe as anything close to normal service. It feels as though the direction of Weezer’s experiments this time round have been to mimic popular acts and try their hand at their trade. Let’s look at some examples: “The Girl Got Hot” – sounds like – The Fratellis, from their first album. It’s all chanty chorus and chugging guitars “Can’t Stop Partying” – sounds like – The Bloodhound Gang, especially given the ludicrous addition of Lil Wayne on guest vocals, who adds an annoying rap element and, basically, makes a poor track even worse. “Tripping Down The Freeway” & “Turn Me Round” – sounds like – Green Day – both of them do! And there are enough Green Day soundalikes without Weezer dropping to that level! “Love Is The Answer” – sounds like – anything Bollywood. Seriously? Why? So here’s my plea to Cuomo, Bell, Shriner and Wilson. Please stop dicking around with your sound. Leave that to Rivers’ solo efforts and B-sides. You can do so much better, but with this experimental drivel all you’re doing is making yourselves look like a bunch of High School students trying to impress their friends. Thank you. www.weezer.com |
