Island Three
DARK AND EMPTY SPACES I3 16.11.09 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
Island Three’s debut EP opens with the odd noises of an intercepted broadcast found in space (I assume this due to the use of NASA images on the CD’s cover and the repeated references to Mars). Then, from nowhere we hear a heartbeat… then track two begins. The first track proper – “Dial 51” – is typical of the four tracks available on this enhanced single. It centres on slow, metal/rock lead guitars, and has strong Prog tendencies. The balance, whether by design or accident, hides the vocals, which gives a good sound but makes the lyrics hard to decipher: this also adds to the arty nature of the Prog sound, but takes away some integrity, as the point of the song is difficult to distinguish. The band follow the template for experimental progressive rock as they seamlessly segue between tracks. “Dial 51” gives way to “Moon Mirror Window”, which blends into “Secrets” – this only being distinguishable as the overdrive is increased, while the sentiment and tempo remain the same. Next track “Tradition” has a new and catchy central riff, but still remains very similar to the previous tracks – it’s hard not to feel that this is the band showing that they can do one style of song well, but they need to move away from the variations on a theme and show us some true variety. All hope of this is dashed as the final track, “Dark and Empty Spaces”, slowly opens into more space noise and interrupted broadcasts. No music, just sound effects. While I’m sure the band are capable of much more, this EP is nothing more than one track with a few remixes and some silly sound effects. www.myspace.com/islandthree |
