Ah! Shoegaze! This opens with the heavy thump of distant drums, massively distorted guitars and lazy, dreamy vocals of single, Morning Light. It drags me back to the first time I heard The Jesus And Mary Chain. The next – 29 Acts Of Love – opens like a Neil Young stomper of the later period, before taking its own road. Like My Bloody Valentine, it’s all about the sonic stage, the atmosphere, the wall of sound conjured up by oh-so-careful over-amplification and application of pedals and effects. The effect is raw but the product of studio magic.

Gliss are a trio, alternating roles – vocals and instruments – between Victoria, Martin and David. Flipping between ethereal floaty stuff and grinding heavy riffs, the album oscillates between poles whilst hanging together thanks to the one constant – compression and distortion. It’s all a big marshmallow of a confection, piled high with sugary shimmer and intoxicating.

Coming with the kudos of having been picked to support Billy Corgan on a tour and wrapped in more reverb and vocal echoes than Vanguard Towers favourites, Asobi Seksu, Gliss are a hypnotic narcotic. And in these times of financial worries, they’ll save you money on drugs by floating your head into a drifting, fluffy place.
