Investigating Brand New on the internet and looking at what other people think of their new album ‘Daisy’ has left me more confused that when I started. For one, you cannot reach their official website as it’s deemed to be harmful to your computer if viewed and after listening to Daisy I suspect this may even be intentional.

I can only confirm that there is some brilliance on this record but in order to get to it, you have to endure some real self indulgence drivel to the point it’s almost not worth the effort.

The noticeable tracks include the single release ‘At the bottom’ which has a real broodiness about it, with its dark lyrics and slow burn of a tempo. As to this, tracks like ‘Gasoline’ and ‘You Stole’ which have real attitude and unique melancholy about to them.

Unfortunately these tracks are interspersed between songs that I that do nothing for the listener hitting rock bottom with ‘Be Gone’ that has been messed with so much that it’s just noise and not good noise at that.

Brand New played at Glastonbury this year but refused permission for the set to be aired on British TV and I get the impression that this anti-establishment stance has influenced their sound far too much.

Brand New seem to have a huge fan base nonetheless and their fans may get something out of this release but I can’t. It reminds me of a Sonic Youth album I acquired in the early nineties, only to be ostracised from the cools kids when I questioned its musical ability, it didn’t matter if you liked them as long as they made you look cool.

I believe the same in being perpetrated here but I’m far too old and set in my ‘Metal; ways to give a damn about what’s cools or not, I don’t like it and that’s an end to it.

But then again I completely got the whole Grunge thing wrong and couldn’t see what the fuss about the Arctic Monkeys was all about.

Maybe it’s me?
