Baddies
DO THE JOB PROPER RECORDS 21.9.09 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
Baddies are the latest band to try to jump into that enjoyable slot of bouncy, pop-rock-punk that has played host to Kaiser Chiefs, The Pigeon Detectives and, most recently, The Automatic. Most tracks sit around 2:30 – 3 minutes in length, seemingly to assist the band when playing live, as the amount of energy that comes through the speakers is quite impressive. Opening track “Tiffany…I’m Sorry” is very punk and undemanding, but sticks in your head for days after. Then comes “Open One Eye”, at which point the comparisons with The Automatic become evident. This is a grander offering, and I can see it being a big track for audience participation when the band play live. Then comes “Battleships”, which is crazy purely from the chorus’s pronunciation of ‘e-mer-gen-cy’. Another contender for the brain jukebox. Seven minutes down, three quite different tracks, and it feels like a lot of ground has been covered. Sadly, it seems like it has once you tackle the remaining nine tracks, with just two of them standing above the others. “We Beat Our Chests” nods towards the Kaisers around their second album phase (where they got a bit dull, but still sounded familiar and enjoyable), and has an excellent 80s-style chorus. “Who Are You?” is catchy due to its bridge, but still needs to step up to be as good as it should be. It’s a shame to say it, but Baddies feel to me like a band who have turned an excellent EP into a so-so album. There’s little to distinguish a majority of the tracks from one another, and the flavour that’s left in the mouth at the end is like somebody trying to emulate Green Day, but not quite getting the ingredients right. A good try, but falls short. www.myspace.com/baddies |
