ONE LOST LADY RECORDS 25.5.09 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
I’ve set the bar pretty high this month in music terms, the mainstay on my MP3 player has been the new Shinedown album and it’s a perfect 11, i.e. all 11 tracks on the album stand up in their own right and deliver. So how does Livid’s debut, ‘One’ compare in such esteemed company, pretty well with a sound that grounded in the classic era of rock music, the 80’s. Comparisons can and are made to bands of yesteryear including Motley Crue, Aerosmith and even further back to Cream but I feel this is a bit too much PR spin. The album opens with ‘Freakshow’, a rock romp complete with obligatory screaming vocals, you get the feeling that there’ll be no subtlety in the music on show here. ‘Don’t Hate The Player’ intensifies the sound along with ‘The Supafly’ (questionable title and chorus not withstanding) to deliver ballsy rock and roll with unrelenting energy. The top drawer of rock tracks is raided repeatedly with tracks like ‘Devils Bones’, ‘Slide Song’ a sleazier effort with vocals akin to Geddy Lee that is, until Psy Ward rips his larynxes to shreds on the finale. Things are slowed down slightly on ‘Deserve’ but this is a brief respite as ‘Lady Saloon’ and ‘Original Rockstar’ crank the intensive back to maximum. In fact the rollercoaster never ceases through the remaining tracks ‘Paraffin’ with its opening Led Zep style riffs, ‘Watcha doin’ to me’, ‘Way Past’ and the ride only comes to halt with a traditional rock ballad ‘Can't Find Home’ to end proceedings. The band has toured with the likes of The Answer, LA Guns and The Darkness and they should be able to maintain their presence in this esteemed company as long as they continue to develop from this excellent debut. The band has already seen its fair share of tragedy but this seems to have made them even more determined to deliver high energy rock music and with an impressive live repertoire behind them I can see their rise continuing long into the significant future. www.lividtheband.com |
