Yeah Yeah Yeahs
IT’S BLITZ! GEFFEN 6.4.09 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk
You know what? You get what you expect from Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They’re the sort of band that, should they float your boat and rock your world, will always deliver. But if you can just give or take them, they’re always going to be a bit…meh. “It’s Blitz!” confirmed this theory when I got into the album. Being a casual appreciator of the band’s work, I’d been impressed by this album’s first single “Zero” and thought it was a successful opening track. I was even more impressed that track two “Heads Will Roll” did more of the same and was also pretty chuffing good. But then things started to get a bit normal. The trio of “Softshock”, “Skeletons” and “Dull Life” are all tracks that would be good in-betweeners. Had any of them been a track two between the solid openers, then they would instantly become great tracks. But, instead, they kindof lose their sparkle in each others reflections. That’s not to say any of them are bad, per se. “Dull Life”, for example, is a glorious modern day folk track, harking back to the days of Sandy Denny. But there’s no follow-up thumper to justify the laid-back vibe. In fact, there never is. Once you reach the end of the album, hindsight shows you that the first two tracks were, in fact, the exception, and that YYYs are really a chilled-out soft rock band with occasional dalliances into dancefloor rockers, which I think is a shame. When you can make tracks like “Zero” and “Heads Will Roll”, why then settle with the other eight songs on this album? www.yeahyeahyeahs.com |
