The Black Box Revelation are from Belgium. They are very young – nineteen (vocalist/guitarist Jan Paternoster) and only seventeen (drummer Dries Van Dijck.) They wear black leather jackets and are very, very loud. The studio boffins must have had all their knobs turned up to eleven on this one as the production is geared to make everything sound huge.

First track ‘Love, Love Is On My Mind’ kicks off with distorted guitar, squalling feedback and screeching before settling into a fairly humdrum riff-heavy bluesy thrash. This sets the mould for the album – there’s not much diversion from this sleazy blues-rock template.

‘Love In Your Head’ has a mammoth Kasabian style beat, and ‘Stand Your Ground’ has a decent hook. ‘Never Alone, Always Together’ tones things down a bit – displaying a much more considered and minimal approach with sparsely picked at guitar, and drawled out vocals. But other than those efforts the tunes are a bit lacking amongst the tornado of noise crammed into the majority of the album.

The band definitely fit into the ‘how can just two average looking young blokes make such a bloody racket’ style. But there’s something crucial missing – perhaps it’s a bit of a groove – which can be a drawback of having a sound constructed of only guitar and drums, but no bass. Overall they’re a little too boisterous for these aging eardrums.
