Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
@ The Junction, Cambridge 13.02.08 www.vanguard-online.co.uk Support acts The Xcerts and Emmy the Great couldn’t have been more different. The former spoilt their good tunes by screaming indecipherable lyrics over them, whereas the latter’s acoustic set was engrossing, gleaning appreciative applause. However with a giant canopy bearing the headline act’s name behind them, both were quite literally in the shadow of Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Taking to the stage, the well-tailored troupe were greeted with rapturous applause, after which they burst into the rip-roaring ‘Waiting For The Monster To Drown’ Songs from The Cape’s debut The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager are welcomed with open arms by a crowd more than happy to sing-a-long. And when he performed material from the forthcoming follow-up the crowd absorbed every word. Following an energetic ‘I Spy’ the Cape spots with his little eye the opportunity to embarrass a few boasters in the crowd- “Who was here the last time we were in Cambridge?” [CROWD ROARS] “And the time before that?” [SCATTERED CHEERS] “We’ve only played Cambridge once!” This boyish mischief is evident throughout, whether he is bragging about his earlier bowling exploits, silencing requests or taking a pot shot at Baby Shambles. Before ‘Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly’ the Southend troubadour uses his platform before a sell-out crowd to remonstrate, or in his own words, “Bang on!” about Fairtrade. What’s refreshing is that its not just words either, as he points out that despite M & S’ best efforts in buying up the lions share, the majority of his t-shirts are Fairtrade cotton too. After including, much to the crowds’ delight, ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’ in his encore, the Junction emptied with smiles of satisfaction as far as the eye could see. The majority of the Cape’s devotees left with a Fairtrade t-shirt under their arm for good measure. I would have too, had I not forgotten my wallet. Oh well, I will be sure to pick one up next time he visits Cambridge – providing he makes a 3rd trip! |
