Brian Reitzell
30 DAYS OF NIGHT - ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

This is the original score from the film 30 days of night based on the graphic novels by Steve Niles.

So when they say original soundtrack, they don’t mean songs inspired by the film, music played in the background whilst in the case of this story, vampires terrorise an Alaskan town, they mean the background music taken directly from the film.

And there is the problem, as a primary requirement, the music adds to the cinematic experience, giving the viewer a subconscious audible understanding of what is happening on the screen and I can’t see why you would want to listen to the score by itself.

As a soundtrack, it creates that sense of foreboding required from a horror movie but without the visuals it just doesn’t add up.

Brian Reitzell has brought together an impressive number of musicians who have worked with the likes of Turin Brakes, Beck and Tori Amos to create this atmospheric piece of music but it doesn’t have the wider appeal of other soundtracks from films like Blade Runner or 2001, Space Odyssey to successfully transfer to the audio medium.
