The Maybees
@ The Sugarmill, Hanley 12.03.08 www.vanguard-online.co.uk
When the Liverpudlian 5 piece walked onto the stage, it seemed a shame that the majority of the audience were the entourage of their support act, The Fears, and left before the headlining The Maybees had even made it out to pick up their instruments. The band seemed relatively unscathed by the small turn out and began to play an impressive set. Sounding distinctly similar to The Coral, you kind of hoped the crowd would hold out to appreciate the music, however, somewhat un-impressed, the audience were slipping away one by one. Hoping to make light of the situation, the boys tried to interact – to no avail, and the painstaking lengths of time spent swapping guitars between songs made their embarrassment all the more obvious. It wasn’t until they played their last song, a ten-minute instrumental, experimental, mind melter that you were thankful the crowd hadn’t stayed. I couldn’t imagine the lads would have had the guts to try to pull this song off otherwise. The unappreciative listeners unfortunately lost their real musical flair, but I’ve a feeling these guys won’t be able to stay quiet for very long. |
