FIRST HIT FOR FREE

There seems to be a revival of good British bands around at the moment dishing out solid, no nonsense, rock music such as ‘Rattlesnake Remedy’ and ‘The Answer’. Well you can add ‘Voodoo Six’ to the ever expanding list as ‘First hit for free’ is right up there with the best of them.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when you consider that the rhythm section of Tony Newton and Dave Cavill have rubbed shoulders in their time with the likes Iron Maiden, Dio and UFO. They are complemented by the twin guitars of Matt Pearce and Chris Jones and the vocals of Henry Rundell.

The album kicks off with ‘Faith’, the first single and I almost expected Chris Cornell to open the proceedings as it reminded me of Audioslave’s, Cochise but this is only a momentary diversion as they stamp their own mark on the track.

It is clear to see why it was included on the cover CD of January’s Classic Rock as a 'one's to watch for 2008’ and emphasises my need to pay more attention to these types of freebies.

The album continues with ‘No Friend Of Mine’ and ‘Feed My Soul’ that doesn’t stray too far from the formula and why should they, but it is ‘Walking On Nails’ that adds another twist. Again the intro has me thinking of a song by Keel (dodgy eighties metal appearing again) cover of Patti Smith’s ‘Because The Night’ right before the twin guitars coming crashing in and take the track on a completely different tack.

Its ‘Crawl’ that is my favourite track off the album. It delivers a warning about certain rock and roll excesses that could be detrimental to the bridge of your nose.

I could continue to divulge soundbites about the rest of the tracks on the album including the slow burner that is ‘Saints And Sinners’ or the heavy bass driven ‘Century’ but I’m not going to, go out and get this album or try and catch Voodoo Six live and I’m convinced, you like me will not be disappointed.

Voodoo Six sit in my iTune between Velvet Revolver and Whitesnake and I get the distinct feeling that even Apple can see their rightful place in rocks rich heritage, some Press releases reference Voodoo Six as usurpers to the throne, thrown it out of the hotel window, TV styley more like!!
