The Fall, The Rise
INTERLOPERS REVOLVER MUSIC 28.04.08 @www.vanguard-online.co.uk My initial reaction when I saw this CD was ‘Interlopers – what a great name for a band.. .’ I then disappointingly realised that was the name of the album. The Fall, The Rise is an OK name I suppose – maybe they wanted to be next to The Fall in anal people’s alphabetised CD collections. I also liked the cover art – a nice abstract image by New York artist Jordin Isip. Onto the music – The Fall, The Rise aspire to something similar to genre-mates Biffy or Hell Is for Heroes. First track ‘Bite your tongue and Walk Away’ has been doing the rounds on MTV2, but is wholly unremarkable. Therefore I won’t contradict that statement by remarking on it further. Vocalist Martin Hurley has two singing styles – either a nasally whine; or a rasping scream. I’m not sure which is worse, but neither is particularly appealing. The best moment of the album comes midway through track four ‘Unbroken’ when he seems to wander off to go make a cuppa; and leaves the rest of the band to their own devices. They click into a bit of a groove; with a looping, grinding guitar riff which builds a bit of rhythm repetition and tension which has been sadly lacking up to now. The track finishes off with a tumultuous and heavily distorted drum racket which sounds great. Alas that’s as interesting as it gets – the rest of the album is just a predictable mish-mash of the same old emo/screamo noisecore which I generally find a bit cold and soulless. They try hard, bless ‘em, but the difference between them and bands who make this kind of thing vaguely exciting is that they haven’t got any decent tunes amongst the bluster to pull it off. www.thefalltherise.co.uk |
