Thought I'd check out Cansei de Ser Sexy again, after seeing them at one of the best gigs of my life last year at the Kentish Town Forum. Back at the Kentish Town they had played a stormer - LoveFoxx being her ebullient sassiest best - Jarvis Cocker even coming on to do a duet. Here at the Astoria they weren't as good. I listened to a few songs and then dived into the crowd, pogoing and that. CSS fans are quite energetic, although quite a few of them are small and soft. You've got to be careful with them. People were having fun. But then there were these two guys - one of them seemed to get really irate that he was being pushed - and started thrashing around - sticking his arse into everyone and elbowing like a chicken on acid. I've seen guys like this at gigs before, they hang around in pairs - obviously keen for a bit of trouble - standing in the moshpit looking for the slightest bit of provocation to intimidate everyone around them. Obviously like all violent thugs it’s a way of dealing with an inferiority complex (who knows what that could be down to?)

Back to CSS. LoveFoxx dedicated one of the tracks to someone who she said had gone missing. It was a bit weird. Apart from that moment she didn't do a lot of talking, which was unusual. Something felt wrong. A few of the tracks in the middle were kind of low-fi mumbling which made us all feel a bit subdued. They ended off with 'Lets Make Love (and Listen to Death from Above)'. Then they disappeared. No encore. Night over.
